Autumn at Martha's Herbary!
Martha's Herbary, gardening, herbs, gardens, flowers, bulbs, plants

The sweet smell of hot apple cider, made with Martha’s Famous Mulling Spices, fills the crisp fall air in the harvesting season at Martha’s Herbary. Walking up the pathway to the shop, one can’t help but notice the autumnal colors of the leaves. The lush garden is slowly dying back, everything at it’s own pace. It is during this special season that the Quite Corner of Connecticut turns into a colorful wonderland. There are many events that happen in the fall here in the surrounding area. Roseland Cottage Fair, a high end craft fair, the Woodstock Agricultural Fair, a good old fashioned country fair and Walking Weekend all happen this time of year.

Our little corner of the world here has become very popular as a “day” trip, with stops at the winery, our place or the Vanilla bean Café. The fall season is a very busy time here at the Herbary. The fall gardens are very special with constant work being done to tidy them for the winter. Tall spires of anise hyssop are left for the finches to enjoy, the iris are cut back and cleaned out to keep them from getting diseased and the last of the tender herbs are dug up and potted to bring in and enjoy during the winter months.

Rosemary, French lavender and lemon verbena will all love to be on the windowsill indoors! An abundance of dried herbs and select fresh herbs can always be found in the shop. Our fall season rolls right into the holiday season here at the Herbary with ornaments and gifts and clothing for everyone on your list.

"A gardener is never shut out from his garden, wherever he may be. Its comfort never fails. Though the city may be close about him, and the grime and soot descend upon him, he can still wander in his garden, does he but close his eyes."

Beverly Nichols
