It's
spring, so start in any section of the garden, any corner
but just start. I start by kneeling in the dirt and
pulling a few weeds. I keep the big garden cart handy but
I like to keep a bushel basket right at my side. When it
fills I then dump it in the cart. It's easier with this
method, the smaller basket is convenient to carry around
as you maneuver in the garden. I like to carefully study
my weeds in anticipation of recognizing a self-seeding
calendula, cilantro or dill plant. Learn to know your
seedlings so you don't pull them every spring. I have
noticed this year that I have many volunteer plants that
need to be removed. Johnny Jump Ups are great and
beautiful in the early spring but after that I pull them
out to allow for other plants. I don't have to worry
because they'll be back next year. Anise hyssop is one of
my favorite plants in the garden mainly because it is so
well behaved. No need to stake this tall lavender
blossomed perennial. It's always a great performer in the
heat of summer. This year however I seem to be overrun
with anise hyssop so I will take some out. These little
beauties don't have a difficult time spreading. |
To
mulch my herb garden I love the color and the chocolaty
smell of cocoa bean shells. The shells set the herbs off
very nicely. Some people complain that the beans get
moldy, I find if they're in the sun I don't have a
problem. They are such a warm brown color and with the
green of the grass and the herbs , they just look great.
Don't forget whimsy in your garden. Carefully placed
statues, fountains and birdbaths can make the garden even
more appealing to a visitor. Fun additions like planted
broken pots, old garden tools, broken pottery and painted
chairs can all help to give a garden its own personality.
I have to say that the one thing customers say the most
about my garden is that there is a sense of humor there.
What a compliment, I love it. Thanks everyone.
Always remember that nothing is forever in the garden.
Plants move around on their accord or don't you be afraid
to move them. If something isn't doing well in one spot,
then move it to another, sometimes this is all it takes.
The garden is a changing, living, breathing organism full
of joy and life!! Last but certainly not least is ENJOY
your garden. Create areas that encourage you to sit, read,
ponder and meditate in the garden. Exercise in your
garden, and by all means eat there too. Create a dining
area in amongst your herbs. You'll be surprised at how few
bugs you'll have because of the herbs. |
