them, keeping them happy year round. Coleus, myrtle,

Making
Hypertufa Troughs - Demonstration
Cement,
peat, sand and a little dirt is all you need to make these
very natural trough containers to plant in. These were
originally made in England for various uses including planting
of alpine plants. We love herbs in them and the plants
thrive very well. Join us as we make "mud"
into beautiful planting containers. Plants and troughs
will be for sale.

Victorian
Language of Flowers - Lecture
Deborah
Long Smith is a Master Gardener and owns Full Circle Flowers,
a business he started to market her field grown flowers.
Today Deborah, dressed in Victorian garb, will talk about
tussie mussies and the Victorian language of flowers.
"Tussie Mussie" is a quaint endearing term that has
come to mean a small, hand held, bouquet of fragrant herbs and
flowers. Symbolic meaning assigned to the herbs and
flowers allow the person creating the tussie mussie to send a
coded message. Talking about tussie mussies provides
Deborah with the opportunity to combine her passion for
flowers and her love of history. She frequently makes
presentations and conducts workshops for clubs and
organizations.

Keeping
Honey Bees - Demonstration
Beekeeper
extraordinaire Ken Korch will be visiting Martha's Herbary
with some of his honey bees, enclosed in a hive, of
course! These fascinating creatures are amazingly social
insects and have a very important role in our
environment. Many of you know Pat, his wife, from
previous lectures here at the Herbary. She will be on
hand to teach us about bee-friendly plants and ways to use
honey and herbs in a variety of products from cold remedies
and skin creams to baked goods. Tasking will be
encouraged! Please join us for a fascinating
demonstration in the garden. There will be opportunity
to purchase these plants.

Water,
Water, Water - Demonstration
Water
features are an important part of the landscape these
days. We at Martha's Herbary have been talking about
this for a long time and now it's finally here. Join Bob
Gogan of Stoneworks Ponds, Danielson, CT as he talks about and
installs a pond and waterfall right here at Martha's Herbary!
This 2-day how-to demonstration will be a great way to get
ideas for your own yard and a terrific way to get on Bob's
list to have your own pond installed this spring. Bob
and I have the same philosophy when it comes to the pond, it
must look very natural. We plan on using CT flat stone
so you won't see any of the liner, we also plan on using a
filter and pump to keep the water clear. Special water
plants will also be discussed and installed.

SUMMER
GARDEN DAYS - ALL SEASON!
All
summer long enjoy a self-guided tour of Martha's Herbary
starting at our pet cemetery that dates back to 1889!
Wander through the culinary raised beds, sniffing and tasting
the herbs. Continue over to the medicinal sunken garden
developed from an old house foundation, now planted in German
four square style design with pea stone paths and a large
armillary in the center. As you escape down the path
toward the lavender hedgerow, feel the gentleness and
calmness that comes over you. Martha's Herbary is
indeed a slice or paradise in the Northeast Quiet Corner of
Connecticut. Simply come and enjoy. Hundreds of
plants and herbs are for sale.
