Spring
at Martha's Herbary
Spring is a time of regrowth, rejuvenation and excitement. The earth is renewed and so are we. Our feet feel the soft, damp earth, the grass beginning to green up and we watch expectantly as fat buds appear on the branches of trees. Spring is here and it is a very exciting time for the shop. April 15th kicks off our spring season. We gradually get in an array of herbs (as weather permits). Brendan will be back in the gardens this spring, keeping them free of weeds and getting the gardens ready for blooms. A major foray into the spring season is the Garden Getaway Weekend, this year May 2, 3 &4th. The Quiet Corner Tourist Bureau does an excellent job promoting this wonderful event. They put out a very comprehensive map and guide detailing all participating garden centers and businesses in the area. Free lectures and demonstrations are the highlights.
Our raised beds are being cleaned out making room for the new shoots from the sorrel, lovage and catnip. (Won’t Lucy and Rosemary be thrilled?) We add compost every spring to enhance the gardens, turning then over several times to work and loosen the soil. Spring is when we move plants, rearrange and divide perennials that have outgrown their space. It’s a great way to share plants with a friend or raise money for a charity.
The sunken medicinal garden is always full of leaves and debris after a winter season, so this is a major cleanout too. Birdbath need to be put out again, or tops turned over and filled. Labels for the garden are always askew after the winter months so re-labeling the spring garden is always a chore. Sometimes we don’t get to it but this year I have ordered new metal labels I hope will do the job. It’s hard finding something that will hold up to rain, sun and wind and still be read.
